The best pieces of advice I can give you are:

1. When checking out companies to buy from, take a good hard look at the finacial stability of the company. I am not familiar with whatever rating services there are in Canada, but check them out and see how they rate any company you are considering.

2. Also buy Disability Income insurance. You said that you run your own business. If you were to become disabled and can't work, that might effectively shut down your business, and you & your family would be left without any means of support.

3. If your wife is also an officer of the corporation, you might want to check out Key Person life insurance and Disability Income insurance for BOTH of you.

Good luck, and be an informed consumer. (Ask a lot of questions. A good agent will never have a problem with that.)

As I am an independent contractor I am w/o employer supplied life insurance. My wife wants me to get some "just in case" I have avoided insurance salesfolk in the past so I am not "up to snuff" on what it is I want and what to avoid.

facts:
I am in Canada so I only need info valid for Canada.
I own a small corporation that I (and my wife) are employees of.
I want to ensure that I take advantage of any tax benefits.

questions
How much to buy? Are there standards? Are they value points?

Where do I buy it? Over the net and phone would be great! Anything to avoid the salesman pestering me for the rest of my days (sorry to the
GOOD insurance salesman but my experiences have been bad) Are there FAQ's available?

Are there generic names that I should use to let the sales people know what I want?

So far I think
- I want "term life insurance"
- I have been told that I should get 5 years worth of income plus enough to repay all current debt.
