LIFE INSURANCE FOR SMOKERS
Can Life Insurance Companies tell that you smoke?
What if you didn't tell the truth about your smoking habit on your life insurance application? What happens if the insurance company finds out that you've smoked cigarettes, cigars or pipes in the past? How much do you have to smoke to even be considered a smoker? The answers might surprise you.

Life insurance companies like their policy holders to be in good health. So much so that some companies have three different premium classifications: standard, preferred, or preferred plus. You receive more benefits such as lower premiums if you're super-healthy and haven't smoked in five years. This is because quitting smoking reduces your chances of dying faster. Being just "normally healthy" requires that you haven't used nicotine in the past three years and still gets you lower premiums. A standard rate requires that you have not used nicotine within the past year.

  • Preferred Plus Rates: Best rates possible
  • Preferred Rates: Good Rates
  • Standard Rates: Reasonable Rates

Are you categorized as a Smoker?
In the term life insurance world, you're considered a smoker if you answer "yes" to the smoking question on your insurance application. If you're asked if you've used tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco, within the past three years — and you have — your answer should be yes (likewise for questions going back two years and one year). If you enjoy a good cigar from time to time or smoke just two cigarettes a year, you are a smoker by insurance standards, even though the nicotine traces won't show up in your required urine test. How should the occasional smoker answer that question? Ask that question for others on our life insurance discussion forum.

Smoking cigarettes, cigars or pipes increases your health risks. It is so important that all insurance companies will ask if you smoke before they approve you. It's on all of their insurance applications. If you are a smoker and would like to apply for a new policy or renew your policy, it's really important that you research the requirements of the life insurance company.

Even if you smoke cigarettes, cigars, a pipe or chew tobacco you could still be eligible for great rates for life insurance. Insurance rates are based on types of tobacco products consumed. They're also based on how long it has been since you quit smoking. It's even possible to get non-smoker rates if you are a social cigarette smoker, pipe smoker, cigar smoker or if you chew tobacco.

Example: A person who has not smoked for over 5 years will get better rates than someone who has quit for only six months.

If you would like to quotes for more than one person, you can return to this quote form as often as you like and submit as many quote requests as you like.

The American Cancer Society or the Canadian Cancer Society may have more information for you on what to look for when purchasing life insurance if you smoke.
